The JOYA Scholars Mentoring Program and College Success Program provide high school and college students from the Garnet Neighborhood in Fullerton with dedicated mentors who will invest in their lives in order to inspire and prepare them for college success. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or would like to request additional information please contact our Mentor Coordinator, Emily Cross, at emilycross@joyascholars.org.


Mentor Expectations

Mentors will...

1.  Be strongly invested in building relationships with their mentee, other mentors and other students in the program.

2.  Strive to inspire their mentee to attend and succeed in college.

3.  Provide support, guidance and accountability for their mentee to help them set and fulfill goals and strengthen their academic skills.
   
4.  Aim to be available to their mentee outside of JOYA Scholars events when they have questions and/or need help applying and preparing for college.

5.  Maintain communication with their mentee outside of JOYA Scholars meetings, let their mentee know ahead of time if they will be absent from a meeting and follow-up with their mentee if he/she is absent.

 

Mentor Commitment

Mentors will...

1. Mentor one student throughout the school year (September through June).

2. Mentors in the Mentoring Program will meet with their mentee 3 times per month at JOYA Scholars meetings (Wednesday nights from 6:15-7:15 pm). Mentors of 9th and 10th graders will attend 1 college visit per quarter and mentors of 11th and 12th graders will accompany their mentee on at least 1 college visit during the year.

Mentors in the College Success Program will meet with their mentee 1 time per month at JOYA Scholars meetings (Wednesday nights from 6:15-7:15 pm). Mentors of college students will accompany their mentee on 1 college visit during the year.

3. Attend a Mentor Debrief Meeting following each JOYA Scholars meeting from 7:15-7:45 pm.

4. Attend the Mentor Training and Orientation session at the beginning of the year.

5. Participate in JOYA Scholars' two annual fundraisers.


Mentor Support

 

Mentors will...

 

1. Receive training on high school graduation requirements, college admissions and student background.

 

2. Receive peer support through debriefing opportunities with other mentors and individual staff support throughout the year.

 

3. Receive appreciation for their commitment to their mentee and the Mentoring Program.
